Frequently Used German Phrases
* **(a vowel followed by the letter "e" signifies an umlaut.)
  • Gruess***Gott
    • This is the traditional Bavarian greeting. You will hear it all the time!
  • Auf Wiedersehen
    • This is the typical "see you later". Often you will only hear "wiedersehen!"
  • Auf Wiederschauen
    • Same use as "Auf Wiedersehen". Often you will only hear "wiederschauen!"
  • Ich haette***gerne...
    • This is the most polite way to request something or order from a menu. For example: "Ich haette gerne ein Cola, bitte", "I would like a cola, please".
  • Bitte
    • This word has 2 primary meanings in conversation. "Bitte" or "Bitte Schoen***" means "You're Welcome". "Bitte" can also mean "please", as in the example abovel.
  • Danke
    • "Danke", "Danke Schoen***", "Danke sehr", "Vielen Dank:--"Thanks", "Thank you", "Thank you very much", and "Many thanks"--respectively.
  • WIe viel...
    • How much...
    • "Wie viel kostet das?" "How much does this cost?"
    • "Wie viel Uhr ist es?" "What time is it?"
    • "Wie viel Zeit haben wir?" "How much time do we have?"
  • Bis dann...
    • Until then...or "see you then"
  • Bis spaeter***....
    • Until later..or "see you later"
  • Bis bald...
    • Until soon.. or "see you soon"
  • Guten Tag/Morgen...
    • Good day/morning
  • Guten Abend...
    • Good evening (used before bedtime)
  • Gute Nacht
    • Good night (used for bedtime or later)
  • Ich heisse...
    • I am called____ or "my name is_____"
  • Wie heissen Sie?
    • What are you called? or "what is your name?" (formal version. Always start out with formal speech until told to do otherwise.)
  • Ich komme aus der USA.
    • I come from the USA.
  • Woher kommen Sie?
    • Where do you come from? (formal version. Always start out with formal speech until tld to do otherwise.)
  • Woher kommst du?
    • Where do you come from? (informal version.)
  • Wo ist....?
    • Where is.....? 
  • Ich bin....
    • I am....
Adjectives:

    • tired
  • Froh

  • Traurig
    • sad
  • Satt
    • "full" as in eating situations. Literally means "satiated".
  • heiss/warm
    • hot/warm. BUT never say "ich bin heiss." It has a sexual connotation. If you are hot or warm, say "Mir ist heiss" or "Mir ist warm".

    • The Austrian village directly south of Kiefersfelden.  (www.kufstein.at)

    • The German village directly north of Kiefersfelden.  (www.oberaudorf.de)
